Alice Kan （黄麗嬋）

Alice Kan was born in Hong Kong, then a British colony. She acquired her first acquaintance with gu-zheng (Chinese zither) when she was a young student in Taiwan and immediately became adopted by and deeply adhered to this ancient Chinese musical art. Over the years, Alice followed the direction of many soloists and musicians, including such renowned masters as Yu-Zhai Zhao (趙玉齋教授), Chang-Yuan Wang (王昌元女士), Mian-Zong Kang (康綿總先生) and Paul Ma (馬忠駒先生) in various places in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the United States. She has successfully mastered many different styles and techniques for the performance of the instrument. Alice also followed Guo-Fu Ma (馬國富先生), who is a famous conductor in Washington-DC area, to study composition and conducting since 2009.

By establishing a gu-zheng class in Good Hope High School in Hong Kong in 1978 and acting as the instructor herself, she began her gu-zheng teaching career and taught there for more than a decade. A few years after her immigration into the United States, Alice became a volunteer gu-zheng teacher in 1998 in the non-profit Metropolitan Chinese School in Maryland. In recent year, she has been teaching gu-zheng voluntarily in Chinese Culture and Community Service Center, Tzu-Chi Academy of Great Washington DC Area, Rockville Cantonese School, Northern Virginia Experimental Chinese School, and Chinatown Chinese Culture Center. Her goal is to provide an entry for those who are interested in this ancient Chinese music to find out if they are talented in this performing art.

• Had 428 performances with Alice gu-zheng ensemble in the United States from 5/18/2002 to October, 2020.
• Had seven TV interviews (Such as FOX 5 Morning News Live on 2/21/2007 & 02/08/2014).
• Performed as a soloist or ensemble for many concerts and special events (Such as: 2010 Smithsonian Folklife Festival 史密松尼博物館20l0民俗文化節at the National Mall) throughout the Washington DC Metropolitan area.
• Performed in different concert halls and theaters (such as: Lincoln Center 紐約林肯中心愛麗斯音樂廳 , Strathmore Music Center, Millennium Stage of the Kennedy Center 肯尼廸中心千禧舞台, and Concert Hall of Centre of the Arts 喬治梅森大學音樂廳, Harris Theater, and the Sylvan Theater of Washington Monument Memorial Park 華盛頓紀念碑公園 ), different government departments (such as: Capital Hill 國會山莊, Darken Senate Building 參議院, Library of Congress 國會圖書館, DOJ 美國司法部, Education Department of US 美國教育署, Federal Research Department, U. S.
